International Sports Roundup June 2019

International Sports Roundup    with Sakuni

These are some of the key moments in the world of sports during the month of June 2019

Rafael Nadal reigns supreme at Roland GarrosNadal won an unprecedented 12th title at Roland Garros by defeating Dominic Thiem in the finals. This was Nadal’s 18th Grand Slam title and inches ever so close to Federer’s 20 Slams. Thiem put up a good fight against Nadal during first 2 sets and many thought Thiem would be a challenge for Nadal’s crown. However, Nadal came back in the 3rd set with his usual playing standards and it was too much for Thiem to handle and eventually losing in 4 sets. This is the 10th straight Grand Slam won by the Big 3 of Tennis (Federer, Nadal & Djokovic) and it seems their dominance in the sport will continue at Wimbledon as well. Ladies title was captured by Ashley Barty of Australia and she was crowned as the new world no 1 after the event.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

For cricket fans in Sri Lanka it was a mixture of triumph, disbelief and frustration during the ongoing cricket world cup as the Sri Lankan cricket team put up some unbelievable performances together with some truly disappointing performances as Sri Lanka failed to qualify for the Semi Finals. Sri Lanka beat tournament favourites England in a classic Sri Lankan performance and opened up the tournament which many believed is becoming too predictable. However, Sri Lanka failed to grab the chance to fight for a semifinal spot as they went down against South Africa in a truly dismal performance. Australia and India are through to the Semi Finals and England is facing New Zealand in a do or die battle on 3rd July. Pakistan have an outside chance of reaching semifinals. However, that depends on the outcome of England-New Zealand match.

FIFA Women’s World CupFavourites and defending champions USA reached their second consecutive finals by beating England 2-1 in their Semi Finals match. Hosts France was beaten by USA in the Quarter Finals and USA are heavy favorites to lift the cup once again. The other Semi Finals will be played by Nederland vs Sweden at Lyon.

Lewis Hamilton dominating F1 season

Lewis Hamilton is dominating 2019 season like never seen before and is leading with 197 points after 9 races. His team mate at Mercedes Valtteri Bottas is in 2nd with 166 points. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel is in 4th place with 123 points after a disappointing start to the season. Many predicts that it is foregone conclusion that Hamilton will win his 5th F1 title. However, with 12 races remaining there is still time for a surprise and we might see Bottas challenging Hamilton for the title.
