These are some of the key moments in the world of sports during the month of January 2020.


Australian Open 2020The new year has started in a bang as the year’s first Grand Slam is now underway in Australia. There was a major debate whether tournament would get underway as Melbourne was threatened with Bush fires that was devastating the country since December. In the Women’s singles Garbine Muguruza and Sofia Kenin reached finals with little fan fair and surprising lot of people. In Men’s singles however, there were no major surprises as two of the Big Three of Tennis Federer and Djokovic reaching Semi Finals. Rafael Nadal failed to reach Semi Finals as he was defeated by Austria’s Dominic Thiem in the Quarter finals. It will be interesting to see whether new guard of Men’s tennis will prevail at long last against the Big Three of Tennis. We will find all the answers by February 2nd.


NBA loses a LegendKobe Bryant the Los Angeles Lakers legend died when the helicopter he was travelling crashed tragically. He died along with 8 other people travelling with him in the helicopter, including Bryant’s daughter Gianna. Kobe Bryant was the third highest scorer in NBA history until Lebron James surpassed him before the night of his death. Kobe won an Academy Award for the short film he produced and wrote based on his life in Basketball in 2018.  Tributes are pouring in from every corner of the world which outlines how popular he had been around the world.

Sri Lanka tour of ZimbabweAfter a disastrous tour of T20 in India, Sri Lankan team embarked on a Two Test tour of Zimbabwe. This is the first Test match for Zimbabwe after re admission following their suspension from ICC. Sri Lankans won the First test of the series by 10 wickets after a commanding bowling performance by the team on the fifth day. Angelo Mathews became the first Sri Lankan since 2015 to score a double century after he made 200 not out. Kumar Sangakkara was the last batsman to score a double century before his retirement against New Zealand. Second test match is currently underway.


English Premier LeagueLeague leaders Liverpool are surging ahead for their first title since 1989 and they are doing it in a commanding fashion. They are currently leading Manchester City by 19 points who are in second place. Liverpool are yet to loose a match this season and fans are already celebrating the team’s success this season. It is yet to be seen whether they could surpass the points record held by Manchester City when they scored 100 points during their commanding 2017/2018 season. Liverpool are currently on 70 points with 14 games still left and 42 points up for grabs.
