Sri Lanka’s biggest advanced analytics competition: Data Storm is back!

The technology is redefining as we speak, Data science is a result of the redefining technology with a unique field that has taken the world by storm creating innovative career opportunities to grab for anyone who is willing to get involved in the field. Data storm 3.0 returns for its third consecutive year with a blend of virtual and physical experience to inspire & energize the Sri Lankan youth (University undergraduates) to upskill themselves for the needs of the revolving world.

Big data is a gigantic, unstructured set of data that can be utilized to address business challenges that analysts have previously been unable to explain. Analyzing this information can uncover hidden patterns, correlations, and other insights that can be utilized to improve customer service, increase productivity, cut costs, and detect errors and fraud more easily.

To groom the young generation about Data Science and analytical process the Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Faculty of Science, University of Colombo presents to you for the third consecutive year Data Storm 3.0 which is powered by OCTAVE, the John Keells Group Data and Advanced Analytics Center of Excellence.

Data Storm is a well-known platform that allows university students to demonstrate their talents in creating smart and inventive solutions while gaining a large learning experience while solving real-world problems utilizing cutting-edge technologies.

Three webinar series was conducted by the professionals in the field to provide an overview of the competition and the upcoming events an adequate idea regarding data science and its opportunities in Data cleaning, Preprocessing and machine learning practices, Algorithm Selection and Enhancing soft skills with Data Science career opportunities

The registration portal will be open from the 4th of March to the 23rd of March and its open to Undergraduates of state and private universities., Students at other educational institutes., Members of Rotaract Clubs and any data enthusiastic youth.

After the registration process, Masterclass 1.0 will be provided by experts in the field, with the purpose of delivering competitors with the knowledge and training they need to tackle a data analytics case.

First-round or the Storming round will take place on the Kaggle platform, and Business & Data Analysts will have to come up with answers to a specific situation in the given timeline where the top 15 teams will be selected as the semi-finalists, while the remainder will get a certificate of appreciation. The semi-finalists will attend Masterclass 2.0, which will focus on the business components of data analysis, business reporting, and company pitching.

In the semi-final round the teams will be given 12 hours to work on a case study with real-world data and they must provide a report with their business solution at the end of the period. The top 5 teams will advance to the Grand Finale of Data Storm 3.0

Before the finale, the finalists will be mentored and coached by industry experts, and they will have the opportunity to maintain their ties with industry experts during these sessions. Finally, the Grand Finale, the teams are required to create a business presentation based on the semi-final results and the deadline will be 24 hours before the finale. During the finals, each team will have ten minutes to present their findings to a panel of judges, followed by a ten-minute Q&A session. The winner will win a cash price of Rs 50000 while 2nd and 3rd places will be awarded Rs 30000 & 20000 respectively.
