Udana – Rotaract Club of University of Colombo, Faculty of Arts

Teen pregnancies have at present become a concerning topic of conversation. In
commemoration of the World Women’s Day, Rotaract Club of University of Colombo, Faculty of
Arts and Rotaract Club of Moratuwa collaborated through project ‘Udana’, in providing a helping
hand to the teenage mothers of ‘Ma Sevana Home for Teenage Mothers’ in Moratuwa. The
teenage mothers who reside at ‘Ma Sevana’ are children of marginalised communities, who
were victims of sexual abuse and have fallen pregnant as a result of rape or incest. The harsh
reality is that girls, as young as 12 years, reside in this home. We aimed to help these mothers
by providing them with certain essential items. We were able to donate said items such as
undergarments, sanitary equipment and other clothing requirements. The funds that were raised
for the project were obtained from fundraisers through personal connections and crowdfunding.
In the end, all items that were requested by the administration were successfully donated. The
project was chaired by Rtr. Thrushika Peelikumbura from the Rotaract Club of University of
Colombo, Faculty of Arts and by Rtr. Disini Thevinka from the Rotaract Club of Moratuwa.
